Crystal Light, a product of Kraft, advocates to consumers as a colorful calorie-free flavor enhancer, yet it contains ingredients associated with serious health risks. Sharon Therien, a writer for Livestrong, states “Two of Crystal Light's ingredients -- aspartame & acesulfame potassium -- have been linked with a risk of cancer…aspartame might also lead to neurological concerns."
The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) recommends caution with colorings Red 40 & Blue 1 found in Crystal Light, as they can cause allergies. The Center warns to avoid colorings Yellow 5, which has a risk of cancer, and Yellow 6, which has a risk of tumors.” Apart from the fact that Crystal Light contains controversial ingredients, such as aspartame & artificial flavors and colours, it yields zero health benefits.
Crystal Light confidently claims to be a healthy alternative to sugary high-calorie beverages, yet it contains the same ingredients as any other diet soda. Benzene, a known human carcinogen, was found at an astonishingly high levels in most Crystal Light flavors. Consuming benzene can cause severe short-term consequences including, vomiting, irritation of the stomach, dizziness, sleepiness, convulsions, rapid or irregular heartbeat, [and] death…direct exposure of the eyes, skin, or lungs to benzene can cause tissue injury and irritation.” While long term consequences, a year of exposure or more, include effects on the bone marrow & can cause a decrease in red blood cells, leading to anemia. It can also cause excessive bleeding & can affect the immune system, increasing the chance for infection…[repeated exposure can] cause leukemia & cancer of the blood-forming organs.”
In conclusion, the artificial facade that Crystal Light exemplifies to the public should be a general warning to consumers across the world to monitor their intake of harmful chemicals or to avoid them completely. As an alternative, simply add a hint of organic juice to distilled water. It's that easy!
