Tonight in the locker room at the gym I saw a beautiful young woman in purple and she was talking to a woman, who was clearly much older (even though I couldn't see her because she was in the shower, the younger woman's deference was obvious) their exchange reminded me of so many things: my own childhood with German grandparents and Czech great-grandparents & the joy and comfort of listening to loved ones communicate in a language you may not have understood verbatim but whose message was obvious. Growing up immersed in the food and traditions of many cultures and embracing them- recognizing at an unconscious level that these traditions and rituals and people added to your depth, to your soul, to your connection to all of mankind. So when I asked the ladies what language they were speaking & they told me Arabic, my connections ran even deeper to the beautiful students I've known over the years, to the glimpses into their lives they've shared. Their hopes, dreams, love for their moms, concern for their siblings and respect for their dads. We're all just humans spinning on this earth together in our perfect messiness #grateful #connected #intled #arabic #sudan #serendipity #onlyconnect #beherenow #culture #diversity #weareone ##immigrants #immigrantnation #americaforall #comfort .
